- She was a hairdresser before she was a singer – Tammy worked as a beautician to support her three daughters as a young, divorced mother before chasing her dream in Nashville.
- She recorded her first hit in one take – Her breakout single Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad (1967) was recorded in just one take setting the tone for her raw and emotional style.
- She was turned down by nearly every major label – Wynette’s early demos were rejected across Nashville. Epic Records was the last stop and they said yes.
- She didn’t write “Stand by Your Man” alone – It was co-written in just 15 minutes with producer Billy Sherrill. Though it became her signature hit, she had doubts about it being “too political” for women.
- The song created a firestorm – Stand by Your Man drew both praise and criticism, especially during the feminist movement of the 1970s. Tammy defended it, saying it was “just a love song.”
- She was hospitalized over 30 times – Tammy battled chronic health issues, including gallbladder problems and mysterious abdominal pain, leading to frequent surgeries and long-term painkiller use.
