800,000 Older Adult Hositializations Due to a Fall Injury...and other Fall Statistics
By The Boomer Report Staff
Every year, millions of older Americans face a serious health threat that often goes overlooked. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among adults 65 and older. In fact, 1 in 4 older adults reports falling each year, illustrating just how common and dangerous falls in and out of home are.
While the statistics can be alarming, it’s the consequences that can follow a major or even minor fall. According to the CDC, falls send 3 million older adults to emergency room annually, with over 800,000 requiring hospitalization. Hip fractures and head injuries are the most serious injuries, but tragically, fall related deaths continue to climb, reaching 49,000 in 2023.
Beyond the physical toll, falls can trigger lasting fear, reduced independence, depression, and social isolation.
The financial burden is equally sobering. The CDC estimates that medical costs from falls exceed $50 billion annually, straining families and the healthcare system.
The good news is falls are preventable. Research shows that most falls can be avoided with simple steps such as improving home safety, reviewing medications, exercising to build strength and balance, and getting regular vision and hearing checks.
Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in an ER for a fall. Protect yourself, a friend or a family member by taking proactive measures today. Older adults can protect their health, maintain independence, and continue enjoying life with simple and often inexpensive steps.
