Kansas - 10 Fun Facts
- They were formed in Topeka, Kansas – Kansas was formed from members of White Clover and an earlier version of “Kansas” led by Kerry Livgren.
- They almost called themselves “Saratoga” – But eventually agreed on “Kansas” to reflect their roots and identity as a Midwestern band.
- Their violinist was classically trained – Robby Steinhardt’s violin gave Kansas a unique edge, setting them apart from other rock bands of the ‘70s.
- Dust in the Wind was a guitar fingerpicking exercise – Kerry Livgren originally wrote it as a warm-up technique. His wife overheard it and insisted he turn it into a song.
- Their big hits were almost left off the album – Both Carry On Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind were late additions to their respective albums and almost didn’t make it in.
- “Wayward Son” wasn’t intended as a single – The band thought it was “too weird” to be a hit. It’s now their most iconic anthem.
- They were a surprise arena success – Despite no flashy image or major hits early on, Kansas became an unlikely stadium draw in the late ’70s.
- Steve Walsh left (and came back) – The lead vocalist left in 1981 but rejoined in 1985 and remained until his retirement in 2014.
- They appeared in South Park – Carry On Wayward Son became part of the show’s Guitar Hero episode, introducing Kansas to a new generation.
- Their logo is based on John Brown – Their famous debut album cover is a stylized version of the abolitionist John Brown, representing their Kansas roots.
