Allman Brothers Band - 10 Fun Facts

  1. They were formed in Florida, not Georgia – Though closely associated with Macon, Georgia, the Allman Brothers actually formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969.
  2. Duane Allman was a session legend before the band – Before founding the group, Duane played guitar on hits by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and even Derek and the Dominos’ “Layla.”
  3. Live at Fillmore East made them famous – Their 1971 double live album became a breakout hit and is widely considered one of the greatest live rock albums ever recorded.
  4. They jammed everything – Known for epic improvisations, Whipping Post and Mountain Jam often stretched beyond 20 - 30 minutes in concert.
  5. Gregg Allman wrote “Melissa” before the band formed – Though a fan favorite, Gregg wrote it years earlier and didn’t share it until after Duane’s death. It became a tribute to his brother.
  6. They were the first major interracial Southern rock band – With drummer Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson, they challenged norms in a racially divided music industry.
